Winter mountaineering in Scotland is like no other; remote, harsh but undeniably beautiful. This is a 5 day course which covers all skills vital to planning your trips in full winter conditions. We run this course in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and will be based in Aviemore for the duration of the week. From here we have loads of options to head up onto the Cairngorm Plateau and tick off a whole host of stunning Peaks whilst also teaching you all the skills you'll need to head off by yourselves once completed. If we have the right conditions we might have a chance to snow hole for a night!

Who's this for?

Hill walkers / Hikers or Climbers looking to progress into winter mountaineering. 

Experience needed:

Prior hill walking experience needed, a reasonable level of fittness and plenty of psyche! Minimum age 16+ 

Kit needed:

A full equipment list is contained in your confirmation email. We can provide an ice axe, crampons and a helmet if needed & boots can be hired locally if required (let us know!). You need to be self sufficient in terms of the rest of kit and food for this course. Scottish winters can be harsh so some good kit and layers are essential!


We will happily sort you out with accomodation if you need, The Cairn Hotel in Carrbridge is where we'll be staying. Has a bar, amazing food and free breakfast, you'll also get a good discount if you book with us onto this course. 



Day 1 - Our start time and meeting point is 9:00am at the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. Here we can have a brew in the cafe / check kit and talk through the week. From here we will head straight into the mountains and start looking at moving in winter.

Day 2/3 - Locations and starting points may change due to conditions however days 2/3 we will be looking at all the hard skills to keep you safe in winter. These will include the ice axe arrests and dealing with emergency situations etc. Let try and bag a good peak or two on the way as well?

Days 4/5 - Exped! These 2 days will be lead by you! We will be with you the whole time however the planning of these days will be done by you and each section lead by a group member. Depending on however everyone is feeling and If the stars align, we might get an opportunity to sleep in a snow hole for a night!

How to book:

To book its super simple, we have 'Open Courses' which run regularly throughout the season on set dates. Just select which date works for you and book online. 

If these dates don't suit, then you can add a new 'Open Course' to be run on a date which suits you better. This will become a new 'Open Course' and will populate a new date on to our 'open course' list and others can join in.  

If you'd rather have us all to yourself, select 'Book Privately' and we will run this course completely private and bespoke to you, on the date you request. We simply add a small 'private booking fee' (£40pp) and need a minimum of 2 people to book.

Yes! We are happy to supply you relevant materials for your course however can't supply water proofs or walking boots etc. We can arrange to hire ice axes / boots & crampons if you need them! We will email a comprehensive kit list to you prior to starting. 

No Problem, we'll happily come pick you up from the closest bus or train station the evening before. The closest train station to us where we are based is the one in Aviemore. If you're struggling, drop us a call and we're sure we can sort something out to help you.

How to Find Us

The Cairngorms National Park is a stunning place. It provides the most reliable winter mountaineering conditions in Scotland and has some of the remotest Peaks (Munroes) to bag in Scotland! Day one of our course meets at The Cairngorm Mountain Railway (see map below) where we can have a brew in the cafe and chat about the week ahead. We will be basing ourselevs in and around Aviemore and there are loads of accomodation options available!
