If you're looking explore the countries hills and would like to learn how to use or further your map and compass skills, our Hill skills course will help hone your skills and develop you as an effective navigator and walker. This course will looked at advanced navigation skills, route planning, weather awareness and much more. ​

Who's it for?

For those who want to learn basic navigation skills to keep themselves safe whilst hiking or to further some navigation knowledge. No previous experience needed. ​

Kit needed:

A kit list will be provided prior to starting the course.

Itinerary:

Here we will brief you on the days activity whilst having a free brew and biscuit. From here we will set off into the hills for an exciting days learning. We sometimes we use areas further away from our centre so you can get the most out of your course, therefore some transport is advantageous.  However if you are struggling for transport please let us know so we can arrange some for you. We aim to be finished around 4:30pm each day.  

Mountain training:

This course is part of the Mountain Training's 'Hill and Mountain skills' accreditation scheme. If you would like to be awarded with a certificate at the end of your course, all you need to do is register with Mountain Training and give us your membership number. Registration is just £10 which can be paid at anytime piror on your course.

How to book:

To book its super simple, we have 'Open Courses' which run regularly throughout the year on set dates. Just select which date works for you and book online below. 

If the open dates don't suit or you'd rather have us all to yourself, select 'Book Privately' and we will run this course completely private and bespoke to you, on the date you request. Your course will run consecutively from that date. 

We simply add a small 'private booking fee' (£40) and need a minimum of 2 people to book.

We are based in Upper Hulme in the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands area of the west side of the Peak District. The medieval market town of Leek is no further than a 5min drive down the road and has plenty of super markets, pubs and shops to explore. 20 mins in the other direction and you arrive in the historical town of Buxton again full of shops, museums, cinema and a theatre.

Yes! We we have loads of maps and compasses you can use and also sell them in our Shop. We are happy to supply you with all the relevant materials for your course however we can't supply water proofs and walking boots etc. We will email a kit list to you prior to starting. If you are struggling for kit just let us know and we will see what we can do!

If you would like certification from our NGB Mountain training firstly you need to create an account with them on their webite. Once thats done you then need to register for the award which costs around £10 for anyone over 18. All you have to do is let us know your candidate number prior to the course starting and we will do the rest.

All our staff are qualified and assessed by the Mountain Training Association and have years of coaching and instructing experience and all participants are covered for all activities via our public liability insurance.

Based within the Staffordshire Moorlands part of Peak District National Park, just below the iconic Roaches; we have some of the best rock climbing and hiking venues the UK has to offer within walking distance of our centre. Situated 5 minutes up the road in Upper Hulme from the local town of Leek, getting to us couldn't be easier. With parking, toilets, free hot drinks and wifi our climbing school couldn't be a better place to start your journey.
